Frequently Asked Questions.

What are the differences between the Free and Professional/Sophisticated Investor Versions?

We offer two versions. A free version and a professional/sophisticated investor version. The free version permits you to select asset allocations, annual distribution percentage and amount and investable net worth. The professional/sophisticated investor version permits you to select additional options, including annual expense ratios, whether the annual distribution amount is inflation adjusted annually even if the preceding year was a year where the investment portfolio yielded a negative return and curbs to both limit and increase the annual distribution amount if the investment performance caused the annual distribution ratio to be outside predefined limits. These options permit evaluation of additional distribution approaches beyond simply setting an initial first year amount based on a percentage of the investment portfolio and then adjusting annual based on annual inflation/deflation. By fine tuning the approach for a particular individual's needs and circumstances, optimal withdrawal strategies can be planned.

How many years of historical information are used?

At the present time, we only use investment return data dating back to 1928. While historical data is available for earlier periods, we view that return data as less reliable for a multitude of reasons, including without limitation, that the return data is for years prior to the passage of the Securities Act of 1933 and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. These securities acts were designed to provide a wide variety of protections for investors, including preventing fraud and price manipulation in the markets.

Do you use international returns?

At the present time, the equity, bond and cash datasets use only U.S. based historical return information. We continue to evaluate various international data sets for possible future updates.

Why aren't more granular U.S. based equity return options available?

We continue to evaluate whether there are more granular historical return datasets (for example, REITs, small cap value, mid cap growth, etc...) available, but have not located any to date which we are comfortable using.

What types of subscription plans are available?

At the present time, a single monthly subscription plan for the professional/sophisticated investor version is available. All subscribers can receive a free 7 day trial period; you may cancel at any time during the trial period without charge. The free version is available without subscription.
